Nind Mill
In June 2009 MDarchitecture were approached to produce proposals for the extension and refurbishment of an existing eco home near Wotton under Edge, Gloucestershire on the edge of the Cotswolds. A planning application is currently being prepared.
Formally an agricultural workers house tied to a trout farm the property is now a family home set in open countryside and in need of modernising and extending. The original property was slightly austere and steps are being taken to soften it’s appearance whilst substantially increase the living space available within the house. A new South West facing lounge, overlooking the lake, is proposed which in turn opens up the kitchen and dining areas to create a modern light arrangement. Additional and potentially separate sleeping accommodation is added and a new utility and secondary entrance is produced, helping to give order to the existing parking area.
The property is partially buried below ground and simple measures have been taken to maximise beneficial solar gain warming the property in the winter, whilst a series of operable vents and a natural stack arrangement help to naturally ventilate the property in the summer. A ground source heat pump is also proposed to take advantage of the natural available resources on the site.
